Health Insurance FAQ |
|
- Does my car insurance cover my medical needs?
Probably not. Most auto insurance policies do not cover the medical bills for the driver (or his/her family) in case of an accident. You may want to buy ?medical payments' coverage to pick up the amounts your health insurance plan does not cover. Typically these are sold in increments of $1000 and are quite reasonable. Back to Top
- What if I have been declined for insurance before?
Please share that information with your agent at Affordable Health & Life Plans. But don't worry, many insurers will cover you despite a previous decline. Some companies are just stricter than others. We can recommend the right companies for you. Back to Top

- What if I am on an ongoing medication?
Again, don't worry! Most insurance companies do not mind if you are on a common medication. Some medications (like Prozac) will only be covered by a few insurers for a new applicant. We will steer you to those insurers that will treat you fairly. Back to Top
- What if I had a recent illness or injury? No. Only a very few individual insurance plans cover standard maternity costs. Every plan sold in Georgia must cover complications of pregnancy and offer immediate coverage for newborns, but the normal prenatal and delivery costs are only covered on certain plans.
Most insurance companies will underwrite a case that has recent illnesses or injuries if those are resolved with no further treatment needed. Even some ongoing problems can be covered right away, such as controlled high blood pressure or hypothyroidism. Back to Top

No. Only a very few individual insurance plans cover standard maternity costs. Every plan sold in Georgia must cover complications of pregnancy and offer immediate coverage for newborns, but the normal prenatal and delivery costs are only covered on certain plans. Back to Top
- Will I be bound to an annual contract?
No. For every month you pay for insurance you will have coverage, but if you don't pay then your coverage will lapse. You may cancel at any time. Back to Top
- If I don't like my plan, can I switch?
Yes, if your health hasn't substantially changed. Back to Top
- Can I be cancelled?
Generally no. The new federal law has mandated that all permanent health insurance plans are ?guaranteed renewable'. This means that you cannot be individually cancelled or have your rates individually raised. All cancellations and rate increases must be applied to all of the insureds in the state who own the same policy. This way the risk and premium burden is shared equally as it was intended. Of course, misrepresentation or fraud are grounds for cancellation as always. Back to Top
- If group insurance is guaranteed issue, then why aren't individual policies?
The new federal law allowed for each state to determine what was in the best interest of insurers and the public when deciding if individual plans should be guaranteed issue. In many states where individual policies are guaranteed issue the premiums have gone into the stratosphere, making it unaffordable for most to buy! This is because people just wait until they are sick to buy insurance then they drop it as soon as is possible. Group insurance has not had that problem as it is a group benefit used to reward and attract employees. Back to Top
- What if I am traveling, will my plan cover me?
This is one area that has great disparity among plans. Many health plans severely limit or remove coverage if you are traveling, especially outside of the U.S.. We can help you pick the right plan for your needs. Back to Top
- Does an agent have to come and see me to take an application?
It is up to the insurance company. Many plans allow you to purchase them by mail without an agent visiting. It usually is in your best interest to see an agent if you have a large number of questions and concerns. Face to face is almost always better than over the phone. Always remember that you do not have any obligation to purchase a plan from us. Back to Top
- Do I have to take a blood test or physical exam?
Once again it is up to the insurance company. Many plans don't require any tests or exams just health questions answered (and occasionally your medical records). Almost all insurers pay for your medical records if they require them. If you do need an exam, then a nurse will call you to set up an appointment at your choice of location and time. Back to Top
